mercruiser 470 alpha one gen one impeller pump question ?

I have a alpha one gen one outdrive and I bought this boat a couple monthlies ago and I thought it whould be a good time to change the impeller pump so i took everything apart but hears my problem the (white plastic tube) for the water pick up was installed but there was also a 6 inch copper pipe going through the white plastic tube aswell is this normal ? or did some buddy Jimmy rig this thang .. please help as far as I know theres only surrposed to be A white water pickup tube right nothing going through it ..??

It should be one or the other, but usually it's the copper one installed

If you look up at the upper housing you will see a black plastic piece with 4 screws that hold it in. It has a large hole and a rubber insert in the hole.

Remove the 1/2 inch copper tube from the white plastic tube and insert it into the upper piece I describe.

It should fit snugly into the rubber insert. DO NOT PINCH THE RUBBER INSERT, this will restrict water flow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now after you have completed assembly of the water pump and you gou to reinstall the lower to the upper you will use this copper tube with one hand and guide it into the white plastic tube for alignment of the water supply.

Once the two halves are assembled the copper tube will be slightly compressed into the upper and lower.
