Hello, I have a 1993 SeaRay 270 Weekender. It has been running great but suddenly the oil pan ran out of oil and I had almost no oil pressure. The engine started knocking and I shut it off. I come to find out that all the oil is in the upper part of the engine. The valve covers and oil filter are full of oil but the dip stick shows a dry pan. I am totally confused. How is it possible that the oil is unable to find it's way back to the pan. This is the case on both sides of the engine. When I removed the filler cap, or breather, the oil began to flow out of the valve cover. I was unable to add any oil to an engine that showed no oil on the dip stick. An I in the twilight zone?

Anything is possible. If what you are describing is actually what is happening, I would have someone with a background in Marine engine repair take a look to confirm. If the lifter valley some how became clogged up( I have removed rags from lifter valleys) this could happen.

Chris, I did find a shop rag was sucked into an intake valve once but this guy says it was running great. No mention of any previous work.
