Ok hopefully someone will be able to help me with this question. I have a 1993 Sea Ray with a Merc 4.3 (serial number OF121304). I need a new engine and I found a 1992 Merc 4.3 (serial number D823678) Is there anyway to find out if I can swap these two engines without any issues? My current engine has a crack on the starter mount. The engine that I am looking at is drop in ready. Thanks for any advice or info.

"Your current engine has what's called a Balance Shaft just above the camshaft this helps make then engine feel smoother when running. The one you are currently thinking about doesn't have this. There are also differences with the cylinder heads, and the way the intake manifold bolts on.

How complete is the replacement engine, and have you had someone look and see the crack can be welded.

Is there anything else wrong with your engine ?"

"I had it welded and heli'ed two years ago, but the crack is on the outside bolt area, there is to much torque and I keep snapping the bolts, which are not fun at all to replace.

The replacement engine is complete with all wiring, manifolds. It is located at a salvage yard in portland and was just pulled out two weeks ago."

"Well, if the engine is that complete, and same HP that you have now, and a good price for you compared to getting a long block ( about $1900-$2200 not including labor to swap over parts and install.

I'm sure you are, and i'm sure you've gone over this many times, but are you using Starter Bolts?
Does the starter have the hanger at the end attached?

I know starter bolt snapping happens, but I dont know what % is from correct bolts with a properly attached starter. Also what starter do you have, there's 2 types you can use, a reg GM one and a high torque one."

"I am using Grade 8 starter bolts, there is no hangar at the front of the starter. My local marine shop looked and were unable to find a strap to put on the front of starter to reduce the torque. The welded area had about 1 - 1 1/2 in crack in it before it was repaired. This was a problem that I found after purchasing the boat."

"Damn, G8. No Reason a hanger

"Damn, G8. No Reason a hanger can't be made, guess there not into that kinda work.

A strap may help, do you have any Welding shops near by you could bring the boat to?"

a high torque mini starter onl

a high torque mini starter only weighs about 8 or 9 pounds. Maybe that would help.
