Mercruiser 4.3 lx alpha one

Well at this stage it’s purely speculation Jack. Until I get it back and see the failed parts I won’t know for sure. But I,m pretty sure it’s not the clutch dogs, or rather should say I do not believe it’s the clutch dogs at this time because he hasn’t gone that deep. The bad seal is in the upper portion of the outdrive resulting in oil pooling into the bell housing. Honestly I haven’t a clue…lol.

The sad part is that all these issues I had with shifting and changing out the whole throttle shift plate assembly thinking this was an interrupt switch issue, was probably unnecessary….The old interrupt switch was working ok until I broke it…. Oh well… it’s done now and I have an updated interrupter switch that is adjustable now. Live and learn eh?

If he replace a seal due to leaking into bellows, he replaced the Upper Carrier seal. It seals to the yoke- ujoint assembly.

Very very common to replace this. I have done hundreds..

Doing my own maintenance and a lot of the repair work is the only way I could afford keeping this old boat going. We do use it a lot for fishing each year. But this year was an exception. I think I logged more time working on the boat and trailer than fishing.

My old trailer was a train wreck when I bought the boat 5 years ago. Tandem axle with 13” tires, but the frame had cancer really bad.
About a year after we bought it I put the boat up on cribbing and remodeled it by welding some industrial strength band aids in the really rusty areas. Getting a new trailer was cost prohibitive. That was 4 years ago… This year I bought another old derelict boat for $500 that had a hell for stout trailer under it. That project of rebuilding it to fit our boat took longer than I thought it would, but it came out nice. The old trailer had nice axles with good bearings that I kept up on maintenance, and I found another fisherman than needed them. So that as cool. I went through the bearings and repacked them on the new trailer and these are in excellent shape too. The only thing I’ve got left to do on the trailer is change out these cheesy fenders and get some brakes on it. I saved the nice fenders off of my old trailer.
I should have done this before putting the boat back on the trailer, but we had a trip scheduled and I ran out of time.

It’s always something with these old boats to keep you busy. I sure appreciate you guys with all the experience here helping me out from time to time. Thanks, Kirk
