hi all new to site rebuilding my 92 mercruiser 4.3 non vortec I had torque down rockers on my heads can I just change the heads for adjustable rockers as the heads look exactly the same even the rockers apart frome the studs
ajustable and torque down

a 1992 build year engine should have had the adjustable rockers from the start....the non-adjustable valve train was introduced at the same time the balance shaft was...

hi there thanks for your reply my engine has a balanced shaft but not a vortec so can I fit the adjustable heads to it as they look identical apart from the studs for the rockers

a few people have told me they started using different components on the engines around that time which has run great for the 10 years I've owned it apart from hydrolocked due to exhaust risers
rusting away

the Vortec changes were introduced long before '92, but not til 96 on the V-6's......I'd still suggest checking the data on the blocks and heads to make sure you get the correct parts for the rebuild...

As to your swap question, if the old parts and the new parts 'match' (bolt count and intake bolt angles), you should be fine...

The safest way I think is to go by engine block & cylinder head casting numbers. When I replaced the heads on my 1988 4.3 (pre Vortec, no balance shaft & adjustable valve train) I got ones with the same casting #.

PS for V6 info ping Scott Danforth on iboats.com he might know. He put up a sticky of all the major changes in the 4.3s over the years…
