Mercruiser 37 litre engine removal

"There is plenty of room in front of the engine. Why can't I just slide the engine forward until it clears the input shaft, then up? I'm not trying to be difficult, just want to understand. From what I've read, if I remove the drive and the engine, I've got to realign upon installation. If I only remove one, I won't have to realign, just install..."

"Dosent work that way.you wont be able to install the rear motor mounts properly, that will throw the alignment out, and that will take out the coupler. Any time a motor is removed, moved, tilted ,etc. there is a chance of mis-alignment plus anytime you do remove one you should install new rear bushings anyway.
To put it another way, you can do it your way but you will be removing the engine again to replace the coupler."

""I won't have to realign, just install..."

Ayuh,....

That's Totally False....

Anytime the motor is disturbed from it's bed,.. It needs realignment....."

"Let's not forget, I'm

"Let's not forget, I'm here for advice from the experienced people. If I believed everything I read, I'd have just pulled the engine. I've got loads of experience with automobile engines but virtually none on marine.

It seems like a no brainer, I'll pull the drive first, then re-align upon installation. Any tips on re-alignment?"

Mark it is a no brainer only o

Mark it is a no brainer only once you have done it and done it correctly.

One of the most said things I have heard over the years is......"I've got loads of experience with automobile engines"

there are alot of differences and a lot of experience needed for marine.

Thanks again to everyone for t

Thanks again to everyone for the advice. I'm glad to have a resource like this to take advantage of others' experience. I've purchased the requisite alignment tool and read up on the alignment procedure. Seems like it's pretty straightforward...

"it's pretty straightforward.
That about sums it up.

"Actually, straightforward sum

"Actually, straightforward summed it up nicely. Removing the drive made it simple to pull the motor. Thanks for the advice...the engine is now in my garage for rebuilding."

"Mark,

How did the re-install go? I haven't even started thinking about 'alignment tools'. What am I looking at once I get my 4.3 finished and back in?"

"Actually, Mark, I haven't

"Actually, Mark, I haven't installed the motor yet. I finished the rebuild over the holidays but it's been too cold here to install the motor. It's still sitting on the engine stand in my garage..."

"Can you tell me what's all involved with this 'alignment tool'? I mean, when I took the lower unit off before I pulled the engine out, it looked as if things would fit back together exactly as I pulled them apart?"

"It's a shaft that emulate

"It's a shaft that emulates the input shaft on the drive. Once the engine is installed, you smear grease on the shaft and place it into the gimble bearing until it seats. When you pull it out, you inspect where the grease has been displaced on the splines. If it's uniformly displaced around the spline shaft, you're good to go. If not, you adjust the front motor mounts and check it again...until it's uniform.

That's the simple way to put it but that's basically the procedure."

""The link for the alignment tool says its for a BRAVO......is it the same for an ALPHA?"

Ayuh,...

They're All the Same,....

Mercruisers,.. Volvos,.. OMCs,... All the Same...."
