I have what is believed to be a 302 ford v8 mercruiser Holly 4barrel carb with a MR drive, the boat is a 1973 but the motor is mid 80's I was told. How do I find out what it really is? The motor has run great all month every trip out, then just the other night it started first turn of the key(like every time) ran for about three mins then started to rev up and down and then died, tried to restart it and got nothing but turning over and over, didnot even sound like it wanted start. Looked into the carb and it was getting gas. Ended up killing batteries trying to restart. Went back out today replaced fuel filter and brand new battery, tried again and it started and ran for about half min. Then I spark tested the coil which did not have spark when i tested it changed the coil to a new one and it fired up and ran for about 15min at a high idle but would rev up and down at low idle and try to die but I would catch with the throttle. Finally I lost it at idle and it died and would not start again! The old coil I took off sounded like it had water it when I shook it. What is next? Thank you for all the help!!
