Mercruiser 3.0 no crank

I have a 1996 Sea Ray 175 with a Mercruiser MCM 3.0 LX, serial # 0F758786. The engine will not crank. Gauges turn on with key. If I jump the solenoid the starter runs but the Bendix does not engage. It did engage briefly the first time I jumped it, but after it just spins.

Could the starter and solenoid both be bad? Thanks in advance for any input.
 
Assuming you're in nuetral & neutral safety switch is good (they rarely fail), jump the big contacts on the slave solenoid (located on bracket, not on starter).
Starter & it's solenoid are reliable unless you've submerged them.
