Hi all.

I am looking at a 21" Bayliner Trophy at the weekend to maybe purchase.
Can anyone offer any advise on what to look out for with the Merc V6 3.0 ltr, common faults etc.

Also the boat itself, any advice there, Is it a good stable boat if the water gets a bit choppy etc.

Any help and advice would be gratefully received.

Regards

Ayuh,... The 3.0l is an I-4 from Chevy....
The V-6 is a 4.3l, from Chevy...

Both are good solid motors...

Sorry I got a bit confused, Yes it is a V6 4.3 ltr.

Any common faults to look out for and things to check ?????????????????????

As bondo said; the 4.3 is a rock solid package.
It is actually the venerable small block chevy 350 V-8 with two center cylinders missing.
Depending on the hours and general condition, you really can't go wrong as long as it starts and seems to run OK.
If the boat is trailered, you should check a small sample of the drive fluid from the bottom of the leg. It should be clear and a blue-green color. It should not be milky white-green, nor should there be any free water or metal chunks. A few small metal whiskers on the magnet on the drain plug is normal.
Also check the engine oil for general color and no indication of water (milky-tan color).

I don`t own a Bayliner but it seem to be a consistent thing, forum to forum. Those who own them like them and those that don`t own them, like to bash them !!
Not everyone can afford a cadillac, some have to be happy with plain old chevs !!!

I know people who have loved them and hated them, rivers and small lakes it will work, great lakes a little small for my taste, 4.3 is a great motor, if you know nothing about I/O's there is maint. needs especially the water pump impeller in the out drive, also need to check bellows, gimble ring, gaskets etc.
I would prefer an outboard with a kicker motor on that size boat but thats just my opinion.
Proline and Triton make boats in that size/ class also that are pretty nice also.

I have owned many boats over the years... My favorite by far was a little 2005 195 Bayliner.. It was a great little play boat and it had the exact same Mercruiser as a much more expensive boat.. Dockside is full of it you can a great Bayliner for a honest good price ... Ive seen a bunch of your high priced boats that were junk used and overpriced new.
