Mercruiser 3.0 Cracked Block Repair/Replace?

I bought my first boat last summer and cracked my first block last winter. It was dumb and I know better now but I have to try to minimize the impact to my budget and boating season.

I can see a 3" split (crack) on the outside of the block about half-way up from the bottom. I have seen people successfully patch this in the past but I am also getting water into the oil. I have not taken it apart to see how bad or how many cracks there may be, but I'm looking for advice on potential remedies nonetheless.

I bought some block sealer and will try to create a closed loop for the "coolant" / sealer mixture to flow through. Hopefully, I can keep it running long enough for the engine to heat up to 150 degrees as the bottle suggests and be able to stop the internal one (if only for awhile).

I have read about welding them, lock-n-stitching them, epoxying them, impregnating them, and replacing them. I just want a few thoughts from some people who may have had experience (good or bad) in the past to help me make a decent decision.

I can buy a remanufactured block for about $2,500 with quite a few accessories on it already. I would just have to pull my engine and take off some other stuff and switch it over to the new block.

Or, if I can get it running for a lot less, maybe I'll just trade it in at a dealer and let them deal with it.

The boat is worth about $7,000-$8,000 maybe. It's a 2002 Rinker 180BR. No idea on the hours.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... That Won't work, no how, no way,....

Yer options are a used long block, or a new long block, yer choice,....

Not sure where you are located but Philadelphia Craigslist has 140 hp long block for $900.

Fast Jeff is right this is a real common problem but unfortunately steep costs. I just got through swapping in a 5.0 in a boat I bought last fall that had a known cracked 4.3 block. Its not as much work as you'd think it is, went pretty easy. Most of the head ache (minor bell housing and motor mount bolts) was related to the different engine and time spent swapping accessories

Good luck
