mercruiser 260 tach/trim issue

Hi guys I'm new here. I have a 1985 cruisers yacht 24' cuddy with a mercruiser 260 in it. My question is we were on the lake the other day and the boat was running fine . We tubed and cruised for a while then while around 2000 rpms it hesitated/stumbled then wouldn't go above 2500 rpms. My tach also stopped working. It reads like the engine is off while running. While going back to the dock I screwed with the trim at 2500 rpms and the boat hesitated then sped up to speed. Anyone ever heard of that? I have power to the ignition term on the tach and a good ground but with a test light I test to sender term and the motor stalls out. Any ideas? Thank guys.

Ayuh,.... The tach sender is the negative terminal on the coil,.... Ground out the coil, the motor should die,....

Disconnect the tach, 'n see how the motor runs,...
