Mercruiser 260 Outdrive Play

I have a '79 Mercruiser 26

I have a '79 Mercruiser 260. When trailered I can move the outdrive side to side about 6 inches. Is this normal? I also notice that when accelerating the boat seems to jump to one direction at two different RPM levels. Is this a result of the play?

"Most likely culprit is the gimbal ring. There are 2 bolts at the top of the ring that need to stay torqued to 50 ft lbs. If its that loose you may need a new gimbal ring, if tightening the bolts doesn't help"
