Mercruiser 233 update

Posted earlier, here's what I have done. Replaced the Rochester 2 barrel carb (tuned to 18-19 vac . at idle of 850-900) switched out fuel pump, checked fuel vent, replaced fuel filter 3 weeks ago, all good. Replaced coil, plugs, wires and points, condenser, rotor and cap. distributor is free and advancing, timed engine to 10 degrees at 600 idle. This port engine runs much better, then before. Before anything above 2900 rpm it would bog down, backfire from the carb, miss and smell extremely gassy. Now since all the above work, it runs all rpm's w none of the issues besides a little stumble and raw gas smell,,, just a little of the last and it pulls itself out of it. Could it be the jets in the carb need to be turned in a bit more? Choke is operating normal. Set the dwell to 28 degrees. Plugs that I took out where tan in color. Thoughts please. Thanks

So would I back the choke off? Or adjust the jets in? It ran a little like this 5 miles out then I trolled on it,, return trip it did the same. But 97% better.

The choke MUST open fully when the motor warms up and stay that way. Pull the arrestor off and see if this is the case. If not, find out why.

I'd open the points up - two more degrees of dwell...

I'd also turn idle down and re-adjust he mixture screws once warmed up.

Ok the choke is adjusted correct (was). I opened the dwell up to 30 degress and set the idle at 600. Double checked the carb mixture screws w the vac meter and obtained the highest ready. The engine still has a mild sluggish moment and smells a little rich. Ideas please??

the idle mixture screws won't make much difference once the engine rpm gets much over 900 rpm.

where did you get the carb from? Did you ask them what jets , rods, and springs they used in the carb?

Finally, do you still have the original style fuel pump or has it been upgraded to the newer style (using a sight tube back to the carb)?

The carb is one I rebuilt that was on it,, same kit as my starboard which runs great. Fuel pump I replaced w another one that I had, w the sight glass bowl on the fuel pump. It ran much better after I did the entire ignition stuff, but still acts like it did this morning. I'm stumped.

Once again,, runs all day 2900 rpm all day w no problems. Could I have something internal in the carb not adjusted correctly? Float was done to spec. Only used the 1 check ball

First off you need to identify what is causing you lack of rpms...........

you have seemed to have covered a lot of ground with no positive results.

So next you need to get down to what is not happening.

So you have to do some down and dirty troubleshooting.

I would rather speak with you over the phone than type a book here.

If you want to send me a private message and include your phone number and a good time to call.

If you want and then we can discuss your issues..........
