"Just bought a boat with a 228

"Just bought a boat with a 228 mercruiser and I want to replace the fluids, plugs, points, rotor, cap...any tips on what parts I have to look at specific for marine application as opposed to the chevy 305 small block and how to differentiate when looking for parts?
What leg oil should be used? 80/90? Engine oil?"

"Use Mercruiser 25W40 engine o

"Use Mercruiser 25W40 engine oil and Mercs. oil filter. Change ALL fuel filters; one in the carb inlet and under the fuel pump dome and any others.

AC MR44T spark plugs w/.035" gap.,
points gap is .016" - .019", Dwell is 26-31 deg. timing is 8 deg. BTDC, idle is 650-700 RPMs.

I would convert the points to electronic ignition."

"Guy, I must disagree. Properl

"Guy, I must disagree. Properly instructed on how to install and adjust they will spark almost down to nothing, electronics are like a switch.Either it works or it dosent. If it does fail do you carry a complete electronic system to repair it with.I`d stick with points.Maybe $20.00 a year."

"For drive leg oil you should

"For drive leg oil you should use Merc High Performance gear lube. Its a greenish color, and can be used as replacement fluid in all pre-Alpha drives.

The general concensus is stick with Merc oil filters and a good 25W50 4 cycle engine oil. I use Merc oil, but many prefer other stuff such as Mobil One or whatever.

Your local Merc dealer can fix you up with everything you need.

Ok, I have to agree w/you based on the cost factor. I am a lazy man and would rather just insert a set of plugs and go.

Boy this "Electronic Ignit

Boy this "Electronic Ignitor vs Points and condensor" discussion is like the "what type of oil to use" discussion! It gets a little heated up!

In my expeience points and condensors have let me down several times and my two pertronix systems I have bought for two different boats have not. They help the engine start easier and idle smoother and you never have to mess with them again. The thing that destroys electrical components is heat. The electro-magnetic field in the pertornix doesn't generate much. But points and condensors can generate enough heat to weld themselves together. I've had several old sportscars to testify knowingly.

Sorry to the old days but points and condensors are out of touch and old technology! I never trusted them even back then. You don't see any of the car and boat manufacturers going to back to them do you?
