I removed the oil filter from my Mercruiser 228 engine Serial No. 4902956 wich is I believe 1977/78 vintage. The filter I removed was part no. 35-802885Q and had five holes in the base. The local supplier told me that this filter had been replaced by filter part no. 35-866340Q02 which has eight holes. When I started the engine the oil came gushing out. I hadn't forgotten the gasket and it was properly tightened. When I queried the filter with the supplier I was told it was the correct filter.

He's right about the filter cross reference. Insert your oil filter part number above in "engine parts" and search. You'll see a list of filters.

Did you check to see if there are any old filter gaskets stuck in the filter mount?

Brian and Guy thanks for your help. You are quite right orig. pt. no. superseded by the later number. Definitely not cross-threaded nor bits of old filter in mount. I'll try again!

"Frank.
If you have the old filter, compare the location of the rubber gaskets on the 2 filters. If you have tossed it, measure the diameter of the round, flat surface on the block that accepts your new filter, and compare that to the new filter. I have changed hundreds of filters and never had a problem like the one that you describe. By any chance did you get a bad filter with no rubber ring on it? Ensure that the rubber ring is actually proud of the filter rim, by at least 1/8". Maybe it's a malformed gasket ring. Can you feel the gasket making contact with the block when you thread it on. Possibly it wasn't threaded properly and you are running out of thread before it tightens up. Try a new filter and check all of the above before installation."

"Bob, thank you for your help. It's a bit of a mystery because I've changed many an oil filter on a car without any bother and I can't see how a boat engine is any different. I've rinsed out and replaced the old filter and everything is fine. As you suggest I will try a new filter and compare the new and old but not right now. The prospect of cleaning up all the possible spilt oil again puts me off!"
