Mercruiser 1970 120 Repair?

My first post to this forum.

Mercuiser 120 (1970 model) needs to have it's exhaust manifold and riser tested for leaks. I looked at the manifold to determine what tools I need. I see that the manifold mounting bolts are in such a tight space that my torque wrench (1/2 in) well never fit in there to do it's job.

Will someone who has done this job kindly tell me what tool to use when torque time arrives.

So it's so tight in there you can't remove the mani bolts? Where is the motor buried under a floor ?

You suspect water getting in the motor, motor used in saltwater?

Got a pic ?

Where the arrow is in the left of the pic, there's only room for a box or open end wrench. Couldn't get a 1/2in or 3/8in rachet and socket in there. So what to do about torqueing at reasembly. Same issue for all 8 nuts.

motor got to come out, sorry i hate, hate, hate." Did i say hate "to tell people those words, cause i had to do it like 6 times myself, with a 120 then the 140 i have now.

And to take out the motor you have to remove the drive, unless there is enough room to move the motor forward at least 6 inch's maybe 8.

The good news the motor is all that has to move. Might be easier if you remove the riser first.

Need a talk thru keep posting and i will talk you thru it.

Hi Chiefalen,

Now why would I need to remove the engine? Is that going to open up the space to get a wrench on those nuts? If so, please explain.

Get a good open end wrench or six piont closed end and use that.

As far as torquing them when reinstalling................in my opinion the only bolts/nuts that need torquing are motor internal and outdrive internal.

the rest use good judgement!! tighten to what feels right but not to tight.

dont worry about torqing those.............just good and tight.

They do make a torque adapter from 1/2 square to what ever nut/bolt size.
