1981 Viking Deck boat. At first start-up it will start but when I release the key it stops like I shut it off. This will go on for 15-30 mins
and then stay running then start and run fine for the rest of the day. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Carb was rebuilt last year before I got the boat. Has had this problem before I got it. Ignition switch looks good and all connections are clean and tight. I think it is a switch issue but I am a British car guy and am new to boats. Thanks for any help.

Two places to look.

1. Large wire harness connector where wire from ignition key switch RUN connection to coil +. Check pins and sockets. Connector should have a hose clamp on it to keep connection tight.

Assuming this is a point ignition ????????????.ALWAYS INCLUDE ALL DETAILS OF ENGINE!! SO WE DONT HAVE TO ASK!

2. If point ignition, when CRANKING a wire from starter solenoid goes to Coil + so it has power to start.

When key is returned to RUN position power to coil + now coems from key switch.

The key switches are typically 3 wire type.
My money is on the ignition switch at this point in time. So replace it!

Just because it looks good from the outside doesnt mean it is OK on the inside...

Thanks for the info. I put a new switch in and it fired right up. Not going to celebrate until it fires up
tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed!

Is there a man overboard switch, that is exactly what happens when mine gets tripped otherwise test switch could be loosing 12 v to igntion in run position
