"Hi, I have a 2004 Mercruiser 135 horse Alpha One, I/O. It seems like I’m having an electrical problem, but I’m not quite sure. When I put the key to the on position, it turns on and the electronics go on, my fuel gauge turns on, etc. But then when I go to START, something shorts out. All the gauges go back to zero, and I have to unhook the battery and hook it back up, just like if I was resetting the circuit breaker. On my first attempt after hooking the battery back up, when I turn to start, something clicks, and then all the power goes out. BUT, every 5 or 6 times, the starter will work. I don’t know why it works sometimes and other times it doesn’t. Something is shorting out when I try to start it. Could it be the starter, maybe a bad ground? I have no idea. Any suggestions?"

no expert but i would check the starter solenoid it may be over drawing power trying to engage starter. But others on here probabaly know better then i do.

"Good point Raymond. Make sure the battery is good and fully charged and clean BOTH ends of each battery cables. Original battery? Probably dead or discharged. Have it charged and load tested. If you replace it, get a GOOD marine 650 CCA start/deep cycle battery if you only have a single battery. If you have a two battery system, get a marine start battery. Stay away from CHEAP batteries.

Still won't start? Check that the ignition switch wires are clean and tight. Switch could be dead but not likely.

Still won't start? Put a DVM on each of the large (use red test cable) terminals to (use black test cable) ground of the slave solenoid next to the big red circuit breaker reset button. One terminal should have 12 volts with the key off and both should have 12 volts in the ignition key start position. The clicking sound is either the slave or the starter solenoid."

"I have seen this a lot on cars.

This really sounds like battery connections or ground connections from the battery to the engine. A little corrosion and a weak clamp on the battery allows enough current to pass to run gages but upon throwing the solenoid switch, the connection is interrupted as the high load crosses the area of resistance (the weak connection) and sizzles.

Make sure all batt and ground connections are clean and TIGHT. Let me know."

Ayuh,.......

I Agree Completely,......
It sounds like that danm Red-headed Step-Child again........

Check ALL the Grounds,.....
Not just the 1 on the battery..........."

"Definately a battery connection symptom.
Make sure battery termanel and cable are squeeky clean at both ends. Also, the cable could have a bad spot, corroded, partialy or completely broken somewhere in its length."
