well i solved the low compression prob. got everything up and going,.....now i find i have a dead spot on the flywheel starter ring,..question is do i need to pull the outdrive to get engine out or can i just pull the engine ???...........JIM

Pull the OD because you have to realign the engine to the OD when you put the engine back. Unbolt the intact engine mount from the boat and not leave 1/2 the mount attached to the boat and the other 1/2 to the engine. That will keep you in the ball park for alignment. Inspect the mount bases, stringers and transom for rot w/the engine out.

Ayuh,.... It's only 8 nuts to get the drive off, 'n a $10. gasket set to put it back on....

Do as Guy says, it's the Right way....

Jim, to remove the engine, the drive can stay attached. It's going back in where the difficultly arises.

And as the others have said, you'll want to pull the drive so that you can perform the engine drive coupler alignment check anyway.

Two choices re; engine pull:

1. Separate the engine from the flywheel cover, leaving the flywheel cover attached to the inner transom plate.
With this method, you wont need to fiddle with the rear engine mount hardware.

2. Leave the F/C attached to the engine (it can be R&R'd while the engine is out), and remove the two rear mounting fasteners.
Watch for all of the rear mount parts, and make sure that they are re-installed correctly.
