mercruiser 120 outdrive

my friend it's way to old really you need everything back from the inner transom plate.

A donor boat with a good drive and bad motor or hull.

how big a boat ? any drive will fit the hole if a merc, i think you may have to drill one or 2 extra holes.

Me i would want a alpha 2.

But i have to say the alphs 1 is a better drive, but where in the world are you going to get a good condition one.

Motor depends on the boat.

tough question.

You love this boat ?

just out of interest, they are sold here in New Zealand, brand new,the Alpha one stern drives, upper and lower units, for about $4800 NZD for both

My boat is a 17ft sea ray jet black with orig. paint has been kept in showroom for over forty years never been abused,it has a little 4 cyl.motor that run real smooth, i just notice some growling noise when i turn and back up.

The noise you hear may not be the drive, It may be the gimbal bearing..........typically when turning and a grumbling sound is heard or felt it is the Gimbal bearing. If your drive was having issues you would see more than normal metal flake in the gear oil ( worn bearings or gear teeth/tooth powderizing), a real loud clunking due to lost gear tooth (teeth),

Maybe time to bring to a KNOWN real good outdrive tech in your area if you know of one and have him take a look.

If it is a simple gimbal bearing or even the Ujoints then it is very easily repaired and no need for an outdrive...

Due to its age a reseal is one way to go--not cheap. If the boat is a "keeper" and the 43 yr. old engine is solid then send the 43 yr. old OD out for a refurbish. The website listed above states they have your model in stock. Call for an exchange quote or refubish quote. What do you have to lose? BUT, I would find out the about the engine's health prior to going any further. Also investigate the condition of the boat's hull, stringers and floor. The boat may look pretty but it's 43 yrs. old and it could probably need a total rehab. Is it worth it?
