Can you use regular automotive

Can you use regular automotive plug wires on a boat motor? I have a 1974 merc. 650 65 hp. serial # 4043108. It has been nothing but trouble. I can not find a dist. for this thing under 200.00. That is ridiculous. Any help would be appreciated.
