"Ok..so I pulled the lower unit off my '96 Merc 60 horse motor to inspect the water pump last night. The housing looks fine and measured well within specs, so I'm just going to replace the impeller and gaskets.
After I took it apart I blew on the discharge hose to make sure nothing was plugged. I was able to blow through it freely, so I stuck my finger up inside the mid section and plugged the end of the water tube where the pump attaches. I was still able to blow freely through the discharge hose even with the water tube plugged. I'm assuming this is normal; there is an internal bypass? I just wanted to make sure before I put it all back together."
