Merc V6 135 1986 Lower Unit - Need to replace

Hi guys,

I am I the process of putting on new Seastar steering, Tilt unit and tilt tube and I noticed some gear oil leaking out of the prop shaft, this has only just been rebuilt due to wobble but it looks like I better replace the whole lower unit. Its an XL shaft 25" but I can't work out the ratio, Merc list it as 2 options but the part numbers are now NLA.

Can anyone advise on where might ship a new unit from and al what unit to look for?

Pressure test your lower unit.----Have you priced a " new " lower unit ?-----Aftermarket may be a cheaper option.

Thanks racerone. the prop definitely has wobble, s rather than do another rebuild might as well buy a new foot and yes he aftermarket is the only option, but I can't work out which one.

To get ratio:Mark prop, say tip of prop at anode/trim tab.Rotate flywheel,by hand, number of flywheel rotations to one of prop gives the gear ratio.
Prop shaft might be cheaper than complete gear unit

Thanks :) I will see what it comes back as. The threads in the foot which hold the main carrier retainer were shot when I rebuilt the gearbox, they crumbled when I removed the old retainer. I got around it by chasing the threads back but it wasn't best practise. I've spent over 2k on the engine in the last 5 years but it would be impossible to replace it, so I might as well get the foot if possible. When the rings wear out, I plan to get over sized pistons and rings and have her honed out. Already have the gaskets and seals as necessary.
