Take a look at the gear assembly under the carb. That assembly should be moving when you shift and yours isnt.

You need to spin the prop to shift if the engine is not running. Your gonna need to pull the gearbox to change the impeller anyways. See if the lever up top moves free with the gearbox off. It is possible the reverse lock is jammming up also what is the hp and serial number?

Get a can of WD40 and spray all the gadgets under the clamp bracket until everything moves free when you shift. The reverse lock cam is between the upper and lower shift shafts. You will see the rod that connects to the shift lock in the swivel bracket. If it is jammed up in the leg it is a major pain to take apart if there is a bad part. You basically have to completely disassemble everything after you pull the powerhead not a project for a novice unless you have the time, tools and patience.

iv pulled it all apart seems theres was no gear oil in it and the rod that goes into the bottom was seased soild i have give it a good clean up fresh gear oil and it seems to be going into gears now but thats wile its stripped down the rod is still quite stiff tho

Sounds like it needs teardown / inspection and at least a seal kit.----There is a strong spring in there that may make turning the shift rod difficult to go to reverse.

I agree at least pull the shift shaft bushing in the gearbox. If water has been getting past the seal the C clip on the shaft tends to rust and the shaft will pull out of the cam and give you a headache putting it back in. Just put in a new C clip while its apart if your careful you can get the shift shaft back into the cam then install the bushing.

Get a impeller and then put it back together they shift hard out of the engine the shift lever has quite a bit of torque. For sure you should at least change the impeller!

The lower unit MUST come apart for inspection.-----If it was full of water it could be a rusted mess in there.----It will only leave you stranded after a few trips.

all back to gether now and forward gear and nutral is all good one noob question when in forward gear what way does prop spin look at back of the boat as in standing out side boat look at rear
