Merc carb has a tiny hole after throttle fly.

Ran into some Merc carbs before my time. '63-'67 and it has a tiny hole on the body of the carb right before the mount hole of the carb. Is this normal? I've seen a couple that had the same hole...
Racerone?
Thanks in advance.

That's there to overcome a bog when the throttle is cracked. Later on, they drilled holes in the butterfly itself; and such holes work. I cured the bogging of my triples by simply (once I figured it all out) drilling the existing holes larger.

The idea is to let more air flow through the carb, drawing in fuel, to overcome a temporary lean condition when the throttle is suddenly opened. Car carbs use an accelerator pump for this function.

Thank you Jeff and many thanks also to Racerone for your attention. I don't run into this kind of carbs a lot. My customer's motor's carb has a hole so I was dazed. I know right away it flooded. I didn't want to have anything to do with this type of cracked carb and a hole so I went to a gentleman who owns a marine dealership and picked up a used carb from him. Amazing this carb also has the same type hole in which I know it's not original. So it's a quick fix by someone as Jeff mentioned. Anyways, the carb works...there's just a leak between 2 blocks....I I only charge the customer the parts, no labor...Now and then I have time and thought about these '67 Merc 9.8hp carb...I am still smiling to myself! Yes, I do drill the fly for quick fix, but not the body of the carb!!!
