Merc alpha 1

My merc alpha1 stern drive is making a taping sound on the lower unit. The sound is when the drive is in gear at low rpm and smooths out at higher rpm. Spinning the prop by hand in neutral is fine and has little play when checking prop end play. Any ideas of what it my be would be highly appreciated.

you could try draining the oil and checking it for any metal bits,or water etc.good excuse to change it

Most make noise when there is no load on the prop.
