"Bought last year in near new

"Bought last year in near new condition. Used this fishing season only at low speeds (lake has 5 mph limit). All was OK until last Saturday we returned to dock and noticed foam running down back of shaft housing. Assuming prop shaft seal was gone, I removed prop. and can't see a seal....Decided I needed a service manual and have one ordered. Because of the age of this outboard, I thought I should probably install a complete lower unit seal kit.....

Questions:
Do I need any "special" tools to do this job?
Are there any other things I should do, taking into account the age of this engine?

undo the drain screw on lower

undo the drain screw on lower gearcase and see it water comes out or milky coloured oil. personally i dont think you have a problem.

"Thanks, John. I did drain the oil immediately. My first thought was that the oil didn't look too bad. Little, if any, water and it wasn't milky or foamy. I let it drain for a week, then refilled with fresh oil, turned the engine over by starter rope a few times and that is where it is now. I did get the service manual yesterday, but haven't had time to digest it.

If not oil water mix....where would the foam come from? if came from high up on the back of the shaft housing (http://www.hmds.ws/Pics/foam.jpg"). I just assumed the foam originated in the lower unit (the only place there is oil) and worked it's way up inside the shaft housing, exiting at the arrow points.

There was no sign of foam behind the prop. but a few drops were inside the exhaust port in the prop center.
