" bought a well craft with a merc 888 (302 ford 2 barrel).Cant seem the get the engine to idle properly below 1000 rpms. The old owner said he used it like that.I would like to get the idle down to 700 or so. New points, rotor, condenser, wires and plugs. I suspect the carb, any ideas? "

" Your probably right, It most likely is the carb.
If your engine has a pcv valve, It is very critical that there be no vaccum leaks at the carburetor connection and at the pcv valve and hose. Add clamps if neccessary. There is also an interrupter switch located at the shift bracket -
disconnect its wire from the coil and see if it makes any difference. However do not eliminate it. If that works, replace it.

" Hi Dennis!
If you need to have the adjustement screws( usually two)for the idle mixture out more than 2 turns I would suspect that you either have a base gasket problem and or you need to service the carb itself. Also, if you almost can close them completely( the adj.screws) I would put some time and money into the carb. What List number does this carburetor have? I guess it's a Holley.
