" i bought a merc 888 and am trying to straighten out problems from previous owner. question 1) Ignition system has a resistor wire the is tied in with the ignition switch wire(at the coil end). the resistor wire goes back into the harness and just ends, not connected to anything is this correct? how could it possibly work? can I replace the coil with one with a buit in resistor and not worry about the wire? Question 2) Does anyone know the tightening sequence and torque settings for the heads on the same motor (302 ford/ merc 888). also is there a special marine head set or is the automotive one ok to use. any help??

" My experience with marine engines is that the head and block castings are standard automotive. GM anyway, I would assume Ford is the same way. However, be carefull of the gaskets. Marine engines commonly have different coolant flow patterns than their automotive cousins which is regulated by the gaskets, head gasket in particular. Fel-Pro makes marine gasket sets for many engines. Use marine specific gaskets or go directly to Merc. "
