When I put

When I put it in fwd gear it runs/spins fine when on ear-muffs at home. As soon as it touchs the lake it stalls out almost immediately when put into gear, although starts right back up & idles/up seemingly fine. Lower unit is in questionable condition(i.e. milky gear oil,bad seals, etc..) but like I said does spin satisfactory on the muffs.
I am somewhat knowledgable of these particular older merc outboards but by no means a marine mechanic. Anyone have any suggestions I can try? I'm all ears..
