Merc 7.5 tune up

Hey guys,

New to this forum and outboard motors. We've had a late 70's/early 80's (still haven't figured out the exact year yet) 7.5 h outboard Merc sitting around for years. It is in great shape, everything internally looks almost brand new. It is not seized up. Tried starting it maybe 6 or 7 years ago and couldn't get it to turn over. I'm looking for tips on what to look at, what to clean/replace, drain, etc., to get this thing running. I don't think it will need much. But for now it's not running. So far I've been told to check the carb and also will likely have to drain any fuel or other fluids that have likely been sitting in the motor over the years. I've done some youtube searches and haven't come up with much other than guys running them on boats and firing them up in garbage cans filled with water for a test run. Not much on tune ups, maintenance, fixes, etc. I'm not real familiar with outboards or motors in general, but learning. Part of my interest in this motor is to learn the ins and outs of a basic motor as well. So I'm looking forward to tuning her up and getting it on the water and running to chase some fins. Any input would be much appreciated, thanks! Until then I'll keep searching.
