Merc 7.5 Thermostat & Gasket Installation

My motor has a thermostat housing but the came without the thermostat installed, Ive received the parts as indicated on the mercury parts drawing but there is no way the thermostat will fit in the housing with the rubber gasket in place, without the rubber gasket the thermostat is too loose to be effective. Ive double checked that I have the right parts, can anyone explain what the setup is supposed to be.

I would use the other thermostat available.----And install the rubber seal the other way on the thermostat.

Hi, Do you know the part number of the other thermostat? I tried putting the rubber gasket the other way round but the gap between the housing and top plate was even worse.
