Merc 650 water coming from exhaust

"iv an old merc 650 early 73i

"iv an old merc 650 early 73ish it is the car distributor style......iv ironed out a few probs with it buti cant figure this one out..............the engine stopped pumping water so the impellor/ housing kit was replaced....it started to pump water ok for about three mins, water was coming from the tell tale hose.all good i thought
then the water stopped coming from the tell tale and come out through the exhaust....can anyone help"
 
Tell Tale may be plugged. Sho

Tell Tale may be plugged. Shoot some air backasswards through it and try again.

Did the powerhead start getting warm?

i blew down the tell tale and could hear down the bottom so all seems good there.....not sure what you mean the powerhead, but the engine runs okay and warms up!

yes mate the power head started to get warm, but i never let it run too long due to the water prob.
any ideas as to why water is coming out of the exhaust, is this a norm?

"Water through the exhaust is normal, its used for cooling. If you are not pumping water out the tell tale then you need to investigate why. I would remove the lower unit and inspect the waterpump assembly, then the tube going up to the head. If it ever got hot there is a seal that melts up there, you can put a hose on the tube and run water up it to test if water makes it out the tell tale. Its no guarente the seal is still good but it lets you know if water even flows up there. There are many possible problems, thats one, another is a piece of your old pump went up there. Give us some more info and I'm sure others will chime in."
