"hello guys.
been reading this forum for a few days regarding my old mercury outboard motors. the question i have is in identifying my most recent one. it is a merc 650 3 cyl 2 stroke. that is the easy part. now for the serial number. it is 7003413. i have triple checked it to make sure i am reading it right and it is correct. for what i see, that number is to early for this engine and/or it is not a US engine. can someone help me, i need to rebuild the carb.'s and such before i try starting it.

"also, as i have no history at all on this motor (got it for $40) what kind of maintenance should i do? i have little knowledge about boat motors in general, but have very extensive automotive knowledge.

The 650 triple came out in 72

The 650 triple came out in 72 and became a 70HP in 77 i think------Now for many MERCURY fans it is not high on the hit parade.The lower unit is somewhat small for the job.Before you spend a lot of time and money check it out---compression test and spark check-----Pull the bypass covers and inspect pistons and rings. Install a new impeller if you think the motor " is a good one " and a keeper.

"Aaron, I would only add to the above that first, your assumption is correct, that is a Canadian serial number. The Canadian records are horrible but does look to fall into the 72 or 73 model year."
