"i just bought an '03 phantom flats boat with, what i was told was, a '98 50hp mercury outboard. it has a hard time starting when cold so i pulled the cover and looked at the carbs and noticed there was no visible choke mechanism. is this normal or am i missing a part. also no air cleaner."

That model uses a primer circuit that sends raw fuel in to fire the motor--no choke. It's energized by...?? Someone know? (I'm an OLD Mercs guy.)

"thanks so much. i did just buy it a couple days ago, so so far i've been holding my hand in front of the carbs and it fires right up. any clue how i'm supposed to do it? what abt an air cleaner? there isn't one. also, black used looking oil dripping from the prop is normal, right? thanks again"

Yes. It's unburnt oil dripping down from above. That sight has been the source of unnecessary heart failure for unknowing OB owners!

The Mercurys usually have a primer that allows fuel from the top carb bowl to run down into a hose barb on the lower intake flange or carb.

The primer is a valve operated by an electric solonoid. The fuel flows on gravity.

This is not a very efficient enrichening process.

thanks tony. i found out i push the key in as i'm turning it and that activates the solenoid. i was told a 50:1 mix(fuel to oil) is good to run but i'm wondering if that's enough. should i bump up the oil for better lubrication since it is an 11yo engine?
