Merc 502 Coolant Hoses

I've got twin 502 Gen V engines with freshwater cooling. I'd like to replace all of my hoses both on the coolant and raw water side of the system. It appears on the Mercrusiers that all the hose from the raw water pump into he heat exchangers and all the hoses on the coolant side are molded hose. has anybody been able to determine how much of this hose could be replaced with regular Shields wired coolant hose. The wired hose can make fairly right turns. Has anyone experimented with it? Thanks, John

In my opinion it is better to use the molded reinforced OEM hoses. Even if the other styles bend well they will not fit the same as they wont retain the bend and hold it in a given position.

If you could paste a link to a web site that shows the specific hose you refer to that may help.

Is this what you are referring to?

John, typically any seawater hose that is downstream of your seawater pump, is under pressure.
Hoses under presure need not be wire reinforced.
Likewise with the coolant return hoses.

(your engine circulating pump hose is under suction, and should have the interior wire reinforcement.)

You may find that by taking your pressure hoses in to an auto parts store (with a good supply of car/truck radiator and heater hoses), you may find that many will be pre-formed and may work for you.
You may need to cut/shorten, but you may get lucky.

Otherwise, purchase the OEM hoses and play it safe!

I agree, I'll play it safe and replace with OE. Appreciate the input. Thanks for the replies.

Believe it or not, all the hoses on your engine are part of the bonding system and help to prevent electrolysis. Purchase OEM hoses.

Put an ohm meter across the hose and you will see.
