"I have a 2005 boat with a Mercruiser 5.0 MPI that gulped water and is wasted. I once heard that this engine is identical to a particular chevrolet truck/car motor. Is this the case? If so, what trucks/cars and year models are they the same as? I can switch over my components and such, but my block is wasted.

Thanks!"

"Would be closest to a 305 Chevy but think you need to understand the specifics of block and head casting numbers and other specs as there are a lot of flavors of 5.0 chevy. Also - Aside from externals, cam will be different and perhaps other internals.

You might buy a "short block" (lower engine less heads) and go from there."

"You would be well advised to go with a marine rebuilt engine from a reliable shop such as Jasper or Michigan Motors. Marine engines have different cams, head gaskets, frost plugs, and in most cases valves, pistons, rings, and rods.
They are built for a much tougher service life than a conventional car or even truck engine.
If you are going to change engines anyway, why not swap in a 5.7 or 6.2 MPI and get more power in the bargain?
The 5.0 is rated at 270 hp, right? A 5.7 MPI will get you 300 hp and a 6.2 will get you 320; all shaft hp numbers. These engines are all the same Gen 1 Chevy small block, and the same weight.
All your exterior accessories will bolt right on including manifolds, risers, alternator, PS pump, bellhousing, etc. You would have to get your ECM reflashed for the bigger engine.
You can run your current 1.47 drive ratio, but you may need a prop with more pitch to handle the extra power.
