Merc 470 ignition breaker problem stumped

"i have an 85 grady white with

"i have an 85 grady white with twin 470s. When i turn the key to to on position the breaker trips. It is connects a red hot lead to a purple while while energizes the coil, choke and powers all the gauges. I disconnected all the gauges, coil, choke and it still trips. If i diconnect the purple wire from the breaker and run a hot wire from the battery to the coil i can start it and it runs fine,. One other note right before it trips the volt meter never moves.

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated,.

You have a bare wire on the en

You have a bare wire on the engine; probably the purple wire. Trace all the wires inch by inch w/your fingers until you find the bare spot. Could also be a connector touching ground.
