merc 40 1980 stalling in reverse

This is where something is wrong. To get it into reverse i have to put the gear select in to neutral and then pull the throttle lever as far back as it goes which then puts it into reverse. So if i then start to push the throttle forwards to give it some gas it then comes out of neutral?

Something is wrong with the control.----------Most control boxes you pull back from nuetral and it shift into reverse.-Then you pull back more to give throttle in reverse.

Something is wrong with the control.----------Most control boxes you pull back from nuetral and it shift into reverse.-Then you pull back more to give throttle in reverse.---Cables may be installed wrong at the motor ??---------------Control box in nuetral and then when you move it to forward the first cable that moves is the gear shift !--When you move to reverse the first cable that moves is the gear shift, then the throttle cable moves as you pull the handle further back.

The small lever operates the throttle in nuetral, used for starting and warm-up only !!!!.---------The small lever must be returned to the idle position before operating the big lever.--------------------The big lever when pushed forward operates the shift cable first , then gives more throttle as it is pushed forward.-----When pulled back the big lever shift the motor to reverse , then gives more throttle as you pull back further.

When you push forward on the big lever which way does the first cable that moves go ?------------Does it pull forward or does it push back ???-----------------This really should be simple to figure out !---When you operate the small lever only the throttle cable moves.-----Double check / triple check that you have cables hooked up correctly.

Something is wrong,, when that motor shift mechanism moves forward you should be going into forward.----Recheck ALL your work !!-The control box is working the way it should.

Are those your throttle and gear cables running under the wheel?Or are my eyes playing tricks on me?'Cause that control looks like it's sitting back to front. If that's the case, yes, when you push the big lever fwd you will go in rev.

I think you have the throttle and shift cables reversed. (Very easy to do.) Remove them both and watch the action as you go from neutral to full throttle. The shift will move FIRST, followed by the throttle cable. Label each with masking tape, put them on correctly, and go boating!

Need new glasses. The warm up lever all the way fwd looked to me like it was raised from the wrong end.Another Homer moment.Doh. I was going to say "A blonde moment" but I might upset the ladies.:D:D

Welcme to a far from exclusive club! Not as many members as those who've forgot to put the plug in before launching, but....

:eek:I preach to my wee girl, "Always check the bung before putting the boat in the water". "And her eyes roll to heaven "Yes daddy". Brother wants to go fishing in my wee speedboat. It's for fun not fish scales all over the transom, splashwell and everywhere else. Load the gear, with much muttering,'cause he's going to to get "NO-KIT" dirty and he's not going to wash her, worse still,he's tee total,so there's there's no beer. In and moored at the slip and I hear those dreaded words,"Hey Noel,is there supposed to be so much water in here ?" A quick lean over the transom, plug in and switch on the bilge pump."Hey very handy for washing the fish when I clean them." What can I say.:eek:
But this isn't helping Becky with her problem.
