merc 3.0 questions/issues.........

I picked up a 98 searay 175 fixer-upper with a 1985 3.0 inline 4 merc. On the merc carb air breather the timing spec is 1 degree btdc and the firing order is 1-4-3-2. On the merc valve cover the firing order is 1-3-4-2. What's up. Also, when i ck / set the timing at 1 btdc it only goes to 8 btdc at 2000-3000 rpm. The engine also has poor throttle response. I rebuilt the carb, flushed the fuel tank, chg oil/filter. I used the thunderbolt electronic ignition from the 98 engine. HELP !!!!!!!!! ADDED INFO

My research shows the valve cover firing order as the correct one. Secondly don't run your engine over 1500 rpm while on muffs. Raises hell with the impeller as the water feed can't keep up with the demand.

Have you checked the engine serial numbers both on the flame arrestor decal and the metal tag riveted on the engine block located just behind the starter motor area to see if they match?

Did you follow the timing procedure instructions in mercruiser service manual 90-816462 page 4B-25?
