"My 1996 Merc 225 (carbureted)most of the time runs great but every now & then when I try to accelerate, it shuts down. No coughing, sputtering etc., it just quits. It will start right up, I put it in gear, try to accelerate and it shuts down. It just won't go over 1000 RPM no matter how slow or fast I move the throttle. (In neutral it will rev over 1000 RPM) After 3 or 4 restarts it decides to run perfectly. Some days it runs great, other days it may do this several times. An authorized Merc repair service rebuilt the carbs and fuel pump, replaced the throttle position sensor, put new plugs and ran diagnostics. They said everything checks out fine (of course they won't spend several hours running, stopping and starting the engine).
I hope someone can shed some light on what may be the problem. I worry that one day I'll be get stranded miles from help."

There is NO TPS on a carb'd engine.

Check to see if the holes on the mid section of the leg are covered at idle. They must not be as they are the exhaust idle relief holes.

Try activating the choke while accelling and see if it works.

"Ralph,

It may be the stator, but finding an intermittent problem can be tough.
