" I've got a 97 Merc. 225 EFI that is having trouble running. The the problem started out with the motor running rough and stalling, only when it's idling and titled up to run the shallows. I checked and replaced fuel filter/water separator, fuel line/bulb assembly... no restrictions. Replaced plugs and added some seafoam to fuel tank for good measure.

Once started, I can get the boat up on plane and runs fine through the mid-range and high end, but stalls again on return to idle. A cold start is a little easier, but now starting is becoming increasingly difficult and especially so when the engine is warm. Does this sound like a fuel pump going out?

My dealer can't get me in until after Sept. 10 and I really need the boat. I don't want to wait around if there's any thoughts or ideas to try I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks,

"Mark,

I don't think the fuel pump is the problem.

The only simple solution I can think of is that your throttle linkage is out of adjustment due to a loose fastening.

The other thought I have is a bit more complicated. There is a possibility that the stator coil is not functioning properly. You might be able to tell if this is the trouble by testing the stator with an ohmmeter, but this test is not always conclusive.
