"can anyone tell me what type of ignition sytem is on a 1968 merc 200, it says thunderbot on the hood but the seloc manual says its a type 1 magnito. phelon, thanks."

"Mercury produced (or developed if you like) 4 differnt "Thunderbolt" ignitions. Type 1 and 2 still had points, type 3 did away with the points and type 4 (or the current version which is what most people "mean" when they say thunderbolt) has individual coils per cylinder. The magneto in the type 1 was a major innovation at the time and allowed for longevity of the system without service or adjustment. So yes it's a thunderbolt, just not the one most people "mean". Model 200 Merc built in 69 (and earlier) had type 1, They switched to type 2 for the 70 - 72 model years and thereafter all had type 4 ignitions.."

"ok thanks for the info, the local repair shop told me that if the stator goes bad to scrap it because the parts are to expensive & he wont work on it because its to old."

Sad fact of todays repair shop

Sad fact of todays repair shop is that the overhead is more / hr than tha wages of people putting new ones together off shore.I am 2hrs north of PORT HURON on the CANADIAN side and I would work on it no problem.

"Yes, that is the attitude "You don't want to fix that old thing because "for no money down"" and on and on... I would advise anyone with an (older) outboard to get a good manual and at least try to do the work themself. Especially on the 25 hp and under Mercs - they are fairly simple engines and with a bit of digging around, you can almost always find good used parts for them..."

"I think I could probably find a merc. dealer that might work on it if needed, I hope it keeps running for a couple of more years, I dont know how good these motors are? I would like to get a new motor but I cant aford $ 2000 at this time, I just spent $3000 for a new boat"
