"Bill, your model or year of the motor would have helped.

However, most 150 Merc's WOT range is somewhere in the range of 4800 - 5800 give or take a couple hundred, depending on the exact model.

So yours is even falling short of the low end.

Before I would go blaming the motor though, I am wondering if perhaps you are severely over-propped for the current set-up you are running...

An incorrect pitch will give you a bad hole shot and rob rpms from your top end...."

In simple terms a V-6 outboard

In simple terms a V-6 outboard is really 6 seperate engines with a common block and crankshaft. You need to do a compression check. You need to determine that you indeed have spark at each cylinder and that each carburetor is actually in good ( clean ) condition.Further running in its present condition may result in serious engine damage

Check your spark plugs and wires. I had the same problem last week. I had accidentally loosened a spark plug lead while putting the cowling back on.
