Merc 1150 flywheel doesn't turn well

I got a merc 1150 for a very low price the motor serial is #4397501 I just got a new starter today and I installed the starter but it doesn't seem to want to turn the flywheel very easily at all.. The motor was sitting upright on a 76 procraft since 04. The motor itself is in great condition electrically! It's really clean and no frayed wires all the lines look great with no cracks.. The motor is not locked up just hard to get to turn at the flywheel with the new starter.. Any ideas?

Have you tried cranking it w/the spark plugs out and the kill switch tripped to kill the ignition? Reinstall the plugs and jump the solenoid top studs and see if it cranks. If it does check for 12 volts on the two small wires at the base when the key is turned to start. If it is there replace the solenoid.

...I myself have no idea to repair a motor.
Are you doing it correctly? If the battery is shot it won't jump even if the starter is new. A bad ground or 12 volt connection will keep it from starting...so will internally corroded battery or starter cables. Start w/a known good battery and troubleshoot from there.

Good idea! That's the answer I'm looking for!
Motor hasn't run since 04 already siphoned all the old gas out.. Before it was out up in a garage the carbs were rebuilt by a professional I have checked them out and everything is beautiful.. Probably after a little lubrication in the cylinders I shoul be good
And to respond to the "I myself have no idea how to repair a motor"
this is my 2nd merc that I've have gotten in non running condition took me a month with the 650 thunderbolt to get her running right.. I have had a 73 chrysler 70 hp that I repaired myself.. It's a learning process but I have ran my tests on the unit for voltage and things. It is just something new everytime I know tho that this motor should turn a little easier , so will get a can of fogging oil!!

Once I get it cranking smoother I will check for compression? I'll get some pics.. I also got the fogging oil but after reading the instructions it says to start the motor n spray into the air intakes? But since it's not cranking do I just Remove the plugs and spray it down for 3 seconds or so?

After shelling out the money for two starters and getting one rebuilt, I could have bought a new one.. N e ways ye motor turns much faster now, I took the fuel pump off a old 115 thunderbolt gonna combine the parts from the two fuel pumps and make a good one since they are the same, so glad I have a parts motor! Then I should be in business, well should be able to continue my troubleshoot from there!! I checked my compression and it's great across the 5 cylinders I can't get to the last one it's very difficult to get down to that 6th cylinder, but I'm gonna assume its fine too! I can't wait to hear this 115 fire up! Tower of Power!!! Woo

There are four 1/2" bolts holding the pan to the upper bracket and two at the front,up top.If you remove these,it allows the pan to drop and give easier access to the bottom cyl.A flexi hose on the compression tester is a help too.Better to know than assume,I can vouch for that:(

I am going to be changing all gear fluids and the impeller tomorrow! I got everything I need .. Also if my old impeller is beyond recognition which direction do I want it to be in?

You will see how it fits when you remove the old one. A dab of liquid soap and a few drops of water aid installation. Any vanes missing on the old one and you have to root them out or they'll cause a blockage and overheat issue.
