merc 115 tilt/trim troubles

Hi, Tim here. A fellow brought me this unit and didn't know the exact year of the 115. Its way different from my 1989 model 115. He said that it suddenly quit working. Motor sounds good in both up and down operation. Unit will move if you help it by pulling or pushing it.....but very reluctant and no power. Fluid seems kinda "airated" after running, but clean and clear after a long rest. Fluid is full and no signs of leakage. They never hit anything with the motor and use a support when transporting the boat on the trailer. Any ideas? tilt-trim merc 115 002.jpgThanks again, Tim

I had a problem like this on another engine, can't remember what kind but anyway it turned out to be the manual lift screw. The guy had backed it out so far that when he tightened it back up it bent a tiny washer inside that fell out of place. Fluid was passing through the damaged passage and foaming up just like yours is. Luckily he told me what he had done when he brought it to me and it wasn't such a mystery. I can't say that I'm too familiar with that unit in your hand though, just thought I'd mention it.

Ok, friend....thanks, I'll check that out and ask the guy what he did so far with it. Any more ideas? I'm checking on another forum too. Seems not too many folks like trim/tilt questions. Best regards, Tim

Tak it apart if you can. That's the hard part. You'll find that they are relatively simple inside and the worn parts should be obvious upon close inspection. All the rings and seals should be available but may take a week or two to get. Motor shaft seals often fail too. It's just a matter of taking it apart and putting it back together the same way. If it's practically ruined you've got nothing to lose.
