"Hi all, I have a 1982 merc 115(#6129026) After getting to speed, the volage to the battery goes to 16v, I have a new battery and switch boxes put in and it still does it. I also noticed where the wires come out of the stator, one is burned and corroded (one of the yellows) I still are continuity between the 2 yellows. All the conections seem to be good. The boat runs fine, I just don' want to replace the stator. If I just repair the wire will this work? Any help would be great THX"

its normal mine does it too if

its normal mine does it too if changed the recitfier no change it has an un regulate charging system so it will over charge veruses a regulated one the regulates the voltage i put a switch in the yellow wire i beleive and ran it to the dash so i can regulate the charging system myself

"Hi, I have a similar question

"Hi, I have a similar question concerning a 1993 15hp on which I've installed the standard 5A charging system for that horsepower range. (back story here.)

The system does seem to be putting out plenty of juice - my battery voltmeter reads about 15.5 to 16 volts at full throttle (about 6000 rpm with a lightly loaded boat). Is this normal or something to be concerned about?

The charging system is unregulated, with only an alternator and rectifier - AFAIU that's how it was designed to run. With this in mind, I installed a traditional open/wet-cell type battery so adding electrolyte is not a problem.

So on one of these small outboard unregulated systems, is there some voltage range I want to see when running wide open, or is this something you just live with and let the battery cope with as best it can?"

"Thx Hamit, that does help by bringing the voltage down a volt or two. Kind of funny to have a good reason NOT to upgrade the bulb on the running light mast to one of those power-saving LEDs.
