Hi, I have recently come by an old merc 9.8hp 110 2 stroke but I am finding very difficult to identify parts. My serial number is 9034285 and it comes up as not recognised in all databases I have tried. I have added a zero to the start but it makes no difference. I would greatly appericate any help. If it is any help here is the pic of my serial number and a pic of what the outboard looks like (mine is in bits so this is a pic of the same logos and cover as mine).

Thank you for your reply. I have done some further digging and the serial number is in the range for a Belgian model 45 4.5 single cylinder (even though the serial number does not come up when you search it in databases.).
Looking at the swivel bracket assembly I think it is a bit of a chop job. Model 45 and 110 use the same swivel bracket - https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER1471-7324A+1&pass_title=1471-7324A+1
That is all good by me and I will continue to try and fix her.

What is the engine doing? Some 4.5-9.8 parts are interchangeable. Have you determined if it has Phazemaker or later version CDI for the ignition system?

I confess this old merc was cheap as chips and I am very lost with the variations made during the life of the motor. From part numbers I have found that most of lower assembly and transom clamp are all the same for many models. So a frankenstein outboard is probable or it was pinched and chopped many years ago.

Phasemaker? The ignition is what I am working on now. The cdi is red, under the red flywheel and with part number 336-4516. From this part number I can say it is a Phasemaker ignition with isolated coils (green with red covers set at 90 degrees to each other). Currently I need a new pickup coil as one is good and one dead. I was considering rewinding the coil with new wire, but I may be able to get the unit locally (been told there is one 40 miles away for £30). CDI has tested in spec, coils test in spec, compression is good and even enough, and the carb is working but the diaphragm is old and tough. I know carb works, as I have cleaned it and with the sparks out and there is fuel spray ejected when engine is turned over (more fom top cylinder then lower - this is a later on issue if it is still an issue - reed valves would be an engine split).

The gear box has forward and neutral only, so I presume it was put on misaligned. I can see below the carb that the gear shaft crown wheel is toothed across one section and this runs out before reverse is engaged but has ample spare if in forward. The gearbox is stuck on solid to the lower assembly, but I will need to get it off to realign gear selector and replace pump impeller. A past owner has knocked chunks off the fins, I am hoping the heat from a running engine will soften any hard grease acting as glue holding the shaft in, that in combination with a good lagging of penetrating oil - if I can get it in there. Then hang motor upside down and use its own weight to assist it loose, being careful not to let it drop to floor.

As for where it is from, Austraila? Canada?, who knows but it is in Cornwall, England now.. It came with an old boat, then sat in a shed for years and then I got it.

What is the engine doing? Sitting in my shed being a stubborn sod
😂
. The engine will be used on my mates little fishing boat, a 3.3 meter sib (rib style).

Ok, I'm heading to bed soon, we'll be in touch tomorrow. Trying to fix a Phasemaker over the pond will have its challenges. Not that its any better here in the states!

Any help is much appreciated, thank you. I will start another thread for the repair work. But just to finish this thread off I am going to try and get the stator pickup locally and have ordered new silicon high voltage cables to rebuild the wiring. 12AWG seems to match well and has the correct colours.
I have also decided to replace reed valves, crank seal etc, so it is going to be a proper project. Currently making my list of parts required. Might try and source a correct vin plate in the process.
I have questions on condensor values also, there must be better options than $70 (£55) plus shipping.

Look for a serial number on the aluminum welch plug, on the starboard side lower rear portion of the block. you will need this for parts.
