Mechanical Fuel Pump 1990 7.4

I have a 1990 raw water cooled VP7.4/454. My oil has a gas smell and the boat will not plane. It has a mechanical fuel pump and was wondering the tell tale signs that the fuel pump is going bad...please help. Thank you.

the mechanical pumps have a diaphram in them that can break or tear over time, off the pump runs a return line to the carb, should be clear or slightly yellow in color,check for wet gas in this line, if their is the diaphram is busted, obviously i would check the fuel filter as well...hope this helps!
