I made a big mistake in buying

I made a big mistake in buying an outboard with an alleged loose rod. Now time to bite the bullet. It is a 2001 mercury 75 HP 2 stroke. Having trouble finding outboard mechanics to do overhauls. I do have a quote to get a complete overhaul for $1800 from a reputable mech.. Is this a reasonalble deal? I really have no idea. Please give me you input. Thank you

"If the "complete" ove

"If the "complete" overhaul includes new pistons/rings/bearings/gaskets, a hone/bore of the cylinders as applicable, closely inspect/replace any rods that are bad then the price sounds quite reasonable.

Rebuilding a 3 cylinder doing most of the work yourself could run you 1000 bucks so provided you trust the mechanic's work, it sounds like a good price...

You may also want to invest in a thorough cleaning and possible rebuild of the carbs since in probably 90% + of the cases, the root problem requiring a powerhead rebuild can be traced to the fuel system and most often dirty/clogged carbs....

This would give you a "like new" motor. Compare that cost to the pricetag on a new one and any way you want to figure it, repairing the old is almost always cost effective. A rebuilt 75 horse could easily last you 20 years with regular maintenance..."
